Using philosophical axioms, historical events and antiquated forms in art history as a starting point, Benoît Maire creates performances, organises talks and uses objects, paintings, drawings and videos for his shows. Born in Pessac (France) in 1978, he was awarded an MPhil in Philosophy from the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne in 2002, and a post-graduate visual arts diploma (DNSEP) from the Villa Arson in 2003. He abandoned his PhD and has been living in Paris since 2005-6. During this period he had a residency at the Pavillon, Palais de Tokyo. He is represented by Cortex Athletico gallery, Bordeaux, Croy Nielsen, Berlin, and Hollybush Gardens, London. He has just finished a full-length 8mm film, L’île de la répétition, and is currently working on an aesthetics treatise based on Jean-François Lyotard’s concept of the differend.
